You’re probably wondering, “Isn’t an uncontrolled rapid ascent dangerous?” Under normal conditions, divers should rise to the surface slowly; however, according to the American Heart Association, as soon as a diver is in respiratory distress, they should be brought to the surface as quickly as possible. It is more important to provide urgent ventilation than to prolong oxygen deprivation by surfacing too gradually.
